In this blog, we compare two popular Srixon golf balls: the Z-STAR and the Z-STAR XV.
At first glance, the Srixon Z-STAR and the Z-STAR XV have a lot in common. Both are premium balls designed to deliver tour-level performance, boasting a reformulated FastLayer DG Core and Spin Skin+ coating.
However, each ball has been designed with several unique characteristics that make them better suited to different skill levels and playing styles. Let’s get into it.
Srixon Z-Star
The Srixon Z-Star is ideal for skilled golfers who like to play with premium balls. This tour-calibre ball features a 3-piece construction, providing advanced players with incredible distance, control and feel from tee to green.
Srixon Z-STAR key features:
- Swing speed - You’ll get on well with this ball if you have a medium-fast swing speed of 90mph or higher.
- Launch flight - The Z-STAR golf ball has a mid-launch flight which is slightly lower than the XV.
- Cover material – A new Spin Skin+ coating helps with control as the ball tends to dig deeper into the grooves of wedges and irons.
- Dimple pattern – A 338 dimple pattern helps to keep the ball straight in the air, even in windy conditions.
- Layers – The 3-piece construction consists of a softer FastLayer DG Core that gradually gets harder towards the second layer.
- Compression – A compression rating of 92 gives it a mid-firm feel.
- Price - £39.99 at gimmeballs (2023 Srixon Z-STAR, pack of 12 balls)

Srixon Z-Star XV
The Srixon Z-STAR XV also offers players a complete tour performance. In particular, this ball is praised for its higher-launch flight and firmer feel than the standard Z-STAR.
Srixon Z-STAR XV key features:
- Swing speed – A good ball for higher swing speeds (100mph or higher).
- Launch flight – A slightly higher launch flight than the Z-STAR.
- Cover material – A new Spin Skin+ coating helps with control around the green and maximises spin on the short game. The cover material is also ever so slightly thinner than the Z-STAR, due to the third layer being a lot thicker, which contributes to the XV’s firmer feel.
- Dimple pattern – As with the Z-STAR, the Z-STAR XV features a 338 dimple pattern for a straighter shot on windy days.
- Layers – The 3-piece construction consists of a softer FastLayer DG Core that gradually gets harder towards the second layer.
- Compression – A compression rating of 102 makes it slightly firmer than the Z-STAR. This will better benefit players with faster swing speeds, starting at around 100mph.
- Price – £40.00 for a pack of 12 Srixon Z-STAR XV golf balls (£3.33 per ball)

So, what’s the difference between Z-STAR and Z-STAR XV?
The key differences to be aware of are launch flight, cover and feel.
The standard Z-STAR golf ball only offers a mid-launch flight, whereas the Z-STAR XV offers a high-launch flight that may suit you better if you like a little extra forgiveness in this area.
Both balls feature the new Spin Skin+ and a 338 dimple pattern, but the Z-Star XV is slightly firmer. So, if you find balls with a softer feel work better for you, the XV is better option of the two.
The XV is slightly better for those who can hit fast swing speeds of 100mph or more, so that’s something to bear in mind. If your swing speed averages around 80-90mph, the standard Z-STAR would be more forgiving.
