At gimmeballs, we know that getting into a new sport can be daunting, especially a sport that is as complex as golf. We are also firm believers that golf is for everyone, which is why we have made this quick and easy guide with some of our best golf tips for beginners. Let’s get started!
1. Start on a driving range
Although it may be tempting to get stuck into the action straight away on the golf course, we recommend spending some time on the driving range first to get acclimated to the game. This can help you practise your swings and technique without the pressure of a full game.
2. Brush up on golfing basics
Before you get started, you should probably do some research on the game! Golf courses consist of 18 holes and include fairways, greens, tees, hazards and rough. Golfers use different clubs for different shots; the main types include drivers, irons, wedges and putters.
It is also a good idea to familiarise yourself with the rules and golfing etiquette before you play your first game.
3. Get the right equipment
If you’re serious about getting into golf, you will need to invest in the right equipment. Your basic gear should include a mixture of clubs, tees and golf balls. You may want to opt for cheaper golf balls while you’re starting out, as beginners tend to lose quite a few! (Our X1 Birds are a great affordable option!)
4. Take some golf lessons
To get a proper swing foundation, it is always best to work with a professional instructor. Your local golf club most likely has PGA-qualified professionals who offer lessons tailored to beginners. These lessons will cover how to grip a golf club, the correct golfing stance and posture and also proper swing mechanics.
5. Practise makes perfect!
Like any sport, the more your practise your golf, the more you will improve. Spend as much time as you can on the driving range or practice putting greens to perfect your shots. When you’re ready for your first round, we recommend starting with a par-3 or nine-hole course to build your confidence.
When you’re first starting out, it can be easy to get wrapped up in your score and feeling like your progress is plateauing – but don’t stress! Try not to focus on your score and instead concentrate on having fun and learning from each shot. Joining a group with friends or other beginners can also help make the experience more enjoyable.
